Cook

This is skilled work involving the preparation and cooking of food in a school building. Duties include the use of standardized recipes, adherence to proper food handling procedures, and involves supervision of subordinate food service staff. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Food Service Director. Does related work as required.

Typical Work Activities

  • Prepares and cooks food in large quantities following established menus
  • Uses standardized recipes and portion control guidelines
  • Supervises and assists Food Service Helpers and other kitchen staff
  • Ensures proper storage and handling of food in compliance with health regulations
  • May assist in the preparation of special diets
  • Cleans kitchen equipment, utensils, and work areas
  • May assist in menu planning and ordering of supplies
  • Maintains simple records (e.g., meal counts, inventory)
  • May oversee kitchen operations in the absence of a supervisor

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Good knowledge of methods of preparing food in large quantities
  • Working knowledge of sanitation and safety practices
  • Thorough knowledge of cleaning methods, materials, and equipment
  • Ability to estimate quantities of food needed
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions
  • Ability to supervise others
  • Ability to maintain cleanliness and order in a kitchen
  • Dependability and physical ability to perform assigned duties

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and one (1) year of experience in large-scale food preparation, or an equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B).

  • Make a difference in a student's life as a tutor! Zoom and in-person opportunities are available. Rates vary depending on certification and academic credits: 

    • Certified Teacher: $45.46 per hour
    • Certified TA or tutor with 60 college credit hours: $25 per hour 
    • Tutor with 100 college credit hours: $35 per hour 
  • There is a vacancy for a cleaner/custodian within the district. A cleaner is responsible for the effective performance of standard cleaning tasks and techniques, which follow a well-established routine. Cleaners play a vital role in making our schools a clean and orderly place for students and staff. The work is done under the general supervision of a higher level cleaner (Crew Leader) and/or custodial supervisor (Night Supervisor). Requirements: a High School Diploma or GED. 

  • Grounds workers perform routine manual grounds and maintenance tasks, including the operation and maintenance of grounds equipment. This position requires some knowledge of grounds and maintenance techniques and processes. The duties of this position are performed under the direct supervision of the daytime supervisor. Assignments are outlined in detail, and inspected on a periodic basis. Depending on weather and activities, employees in this class may be required to alter shift hours depending on operational needs. Requirements: a High School Diploma or GED.

  • Have you ever considered becoming a teaching assistant? Teaching Assistants work to support our students and teachers throughout the day in many different ways. This is a certified position where you would need to meet the following requirements:

    • Have a HS diploma
    • Take 2 courses online (one is free, one you pay for). Financial assistance may be available.
    • DASA course at BOCES (~$100). Financial assistance may be available.
    • State Teaching Assistant test at any location (~$100). Financial assistance may be available.
    • Create a TEACH account (Pay $35 to apply for your certification and be sure to submit all documentation).

    Teaching assistants, aides, and monitors work from September through June with all student holidays and vacations off. We have excellent health insurance, dental and retirement plan.
